Sault Ste. Marie Police are warning residents of a scam making its way through the area.

Police tell us they have received information that a person is calling people in the area and impersonating the retired/former Captain Mike Whitney.

Police say they do not solicit money over the phone, or tell people over the phone that they will arrest them if they don't pay the police.

If anyone asks you to give credit card numbers, banking information, or personal information over the phone, police say it is likely a scam.

If anyone tries to convince you over the phone to purchase cryptocurrency or gift cards and provide account numbers, police say again, it it likely a scam
